Yamano Chaya Rakusui is a hillside lunch café above the Tamagusuku coast in Nanjo, built into the natural limestone, that serves meat-free Okinawan sets from 11:00 to 15:00 except on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The inside walls of Rakusui are the bare limestone of the slope it is built into, and the second floor looks out over the reef. The owner set out to serve natural food in the forest, and the lunch to order is the kouso genmai gozen, an Okinawan home-style set built around enzyme-fermented brown rice with no meat at all. Cake sets are on the menu too.
Lunch runs only from 11:00 to 15:00 and the café closes two days a week, so plan around it. Since 1 February 2025 the whole place has been non-smoking, terraces included.
