Sawada no Hama
佐和田の浜24°50′ N 125°10′ ETidepool
Sawada no Hama is a shallow tidal beach on Irabu's north-west coast scattered with boulders thrown ashore by the 1771 Meiwa tsunami, and it is one of Japan's 100 selected beaches for its sunsets.
The water at Sawada is so shallow that at low tide you can walk far out across the flats among the big rocks. Many of those boulders came ashore with the Meiwa tsunami of 24 April 1771, and some may be older. The beach is on the national list of Japan's 100 best beaches, and the approach lights of Shimojishima Airport run out into the sea at the Shimoji end.
Stone fish weirs, called nagaki, still stand on the tidal flats and are a city folk-cultural property. The shallows make Sawada poor for swimming or snorkelling. Come at sunset, check the tide before you walk out, and turn back before the flood tide, which runs strongly at springs.
Before you swim
- Currents offshore change with the time of day
- The incoming tide runs strongly at spring tides; watch your way back when walking out
December to March
Marea Miyakojima puts March water at 21–23 °C, and JMA normals give Miyako a February average high of 21.1 °C. The shallow flats face north-west into the winter wind, so come for the boulders and the sunset.
