Bise lies on the northern tip of the Motobu Peninsula, just beyond the Ocean Expo Park, and its lanes form a grid. Nearly every one of its roughly 250 houses sits inside a thick screen of fukugi, the tree that Okinawans have long planted around homes near the sea to break the force of typhoons. There are several thousand trees in all.
The tree-lined lanes run for about a kilometre toward Bise point, and the light comes through in patches. Carts carry visitors through the village at walking pace. The Motobu Tourism Association describes the place as a picture of an Okinawan village of the past and the slower time that went with it.
The village sits close to the Ocean Expo Park and the Churaumi Aquarium. Bus routes 65, 66 and 70 stop at Bise-iriguchi, about 5 minutes on foot from the lanes, and the trees keep the lanes in shade through the middle of the day.
