Mahaina is the practical family choice for the Churaumi end of the Motobu peninsula, five minutes by car from the aquarium and Emerald Beach and about 100 minutes from the airport. Of its 230 rooms, 163 are Japanese-Western rooms with space for a family, and the dinner buffet runs to more than 50 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes. The large bath on the second floor of the Ocean Tower has reopened, with morning and evening hours. Pottery and canoe trips can be booked.

The 30-metre garden pool closes from November to March, and the indoor pool, open all year with a shallow end for children, carries a winter stay. The hotel rents bicycles for a fee. Motobu's coast road runs north from here to Bise and Nakijin and south toward Sesoko, so a few days of peninsula riding can start at the door. Ask about storing your own bike.
