Kurima

Kurima is a 2.82 km² farm island of 152 people that the 1,690 m Kurima Ohashi joins to Miyako-jima, and its observatory and cafés sit near the bridge.
Kurima was a farm island reached by boat from Maehama port until the Kurima Ohashi opened in March 1995. The bridge was built as a farm road, and a pipe under its deck still carries irrigation water and power from Miyako's underground dam to the sugarcane and leaf tobacco that cover most of the island. The one village sits on the east side.
Most visitors climb the three-storey Ryugu-jo observatory for the view back to Maehama and stay on for the sunset at Nagamahama. Okinawa Soba Marukami tops Tabelog's soba ranking for the Miyako islands and runs a morning whiteboard, and Rakuen no Kajitsu by the observatory makes mango parfaits.
Getting there
Cross the 1,690 m Kurima Ohashi from the south-east end of Yonaha Maehama. The drive from Miyako Airport takes about 25 minutes.
Getting around
On foot, by bike or by car; the island has one village on its east side and farm roads through the cane and tobacco fields.
Riding on Kurima
Kurima is a small farm island across the Kurima Ohashi from Maehama, with 9.0 km of coastline and a high point of 47.3 m. Ride up to the Ryugu-jo observatory from the bridge, then follow the farm roads to Nagamahama on the west side. It makes a short morning out from a Maehama or Hirara base.
Bring a bike from Hirara; Aoyagi Cycle's mobile repairs cover Kurima.
December to March
Mild and breezy. The bridge takes the north wind side-on, and the cafés by the bridge and observatory keep their own hours; Rakuen no Kajitsu publishes its closing days on its website.
Worth knowing
- Sign up at Marukami before 10:00, loop the island, then come back for soba.
- Nagamahama has no toilets or parking; bring water.
