Do you need a car on Miyako?

You need one for most stays outside Hirara. Miyako's buses run a handful of times a day from the Hirara garage, and route 4 reaches the Tokyu at Maehama and carries on over the bridge to Kurima. Shimojishima Airport has its own buses, and they run only when the flights do. In Hirara you can skip the car. BIGJOY Miyakojima rents e-bikes for ¥2,500 per 24 hours with paid hotel delivery, and Shima no Cycling Miyakojima rents road bikes in the centre of town. The Irabu Ohashi loop and the Ikema loop both start at Painagama Beach on the waterfront.

Which Hirara hotel should you pick?

Hotel Locus is the pick for a view of the harbour. Hotel Locus opened in 2018, and every one of its 100 rooms looks over the harbour at Shimozato. Jalan listed room only at ¥12,800 for two, and a late-checkout plan held the room from 15:00 to 13:00 for ¥13,040, which lets you shower after a morning ride (Jalan, 15 February 2027). It suits couples and riders, and breakfast pushes the price up fast, to ¥34,400 for two in a twin.

Hotel Peace Island Miyakojima Shiyakusho-dori puts a washer-dryer and a microwave in each of its 98 rooms, and the large bath is free. Divers get lockers. If clean kit every morning matters more than the view, take this one, at ¥14,600 for two, room only. It's a town business hotel with no sea outside. Smile Hotel Miyakojima was the cheapest of the three at ¥10,032 for two. Most rooms run to 16–17 m², and parking costs ¥1,500 a night.

On the edge of town at Kugai, the Hilton and Canopy by Hilton share a plot by the beach, and the Irabu Ohashi starts almost at the door. Both run a free scheduled shuttle to Miyako Airport, 15 minutes away. Canopy opened in April 2026, and its rooftop infinity pool takes the full February wind. Guests can use the Hilton's indoor pool free. Hirara's restaurants are a taxi ride from either.

Where can you swim outdoors in February?

Shigira is where the heated pools are. Miyako averages 18.6 °C in February, with a mean high of 21.1 °C and a north-north-easterly averaging 4.8 m/s, by JMA's 1991–2020 normals for Hirara (JMA). The sea sits around 23 °C. An unheated pool feels cold in that, and our riding climate page has every month.

Hotel Shigira Mirage Beachfront heats its outdoor pool in winter and keeps it open all year, beside its own beach. The Deluxe Floor breakfast plan was ¥69,080 for two. It suits couples who came to swim, and the price is the drawback. Up the hill, Hotel Shigira Mirage heats each Pool Villa Premier's private pool from November to March, from ¥113,120 for two with breakfast on the 120-day early plan. Shigira Bayside Suite Allamanda says only that some of its villa pools can be heated in winter, so ask for one when you book. Its breakfast plan was ¥62,920 for two. The Shigira airport shuttle needs you at the airport counter between 10:00 and 17:30.

In February check the pool before the view, because Iraph SUI and Seawood both keep their main pools shut until March. Iraph SUI opens on 1 March, and Seawood's main pool waits until the 16th. The Tokyu's pool opens in summer only. The Rescape's cheaper February plans leave the private pools unheated.

What are Irabu and Shimoji like to stay on?

Irabu suits people with a car and a taste for quiet. Its stays run from ¥8,400 for two at a minshuku to over ¥100,000 at Iraph SUI. Iraph SUI has 58 rooms and a free shuttle to Toguchi no Hama, and it runs free transfers from both airports if you send your flight three days ahead. Its Kagisuma dinner-and-breakfast plan was ¥103,730 for two (Jalan). Couples on a special trip fit best, and in February the pool is shut. soraniwa hotel runs five rooms and a café, with bikes and a drying room for a fee, from ¥22,000 for two room only (Jalan). You'll drive to dinner.

Minshuku Maruyoshi is the old-style inn here. It has eight rooms by the Irabu post office, and its canteen, Maruyoshi Shokudo, made a list of 100 places to eat in Kyushu and Okinawa. Guests eat breakfast there, and lunch runs 11:00–14:00 except Mondays. Evening service is suspended, payment is cash only and the gate shuts at 22:00 (Rakuten Travel, October 2026). Jalan listed rooms from ¥8,400 for two that month. Divers get a drying area, with no rinse tank. For dinner, Ryugu cooks Miyako fish by reservation only.

Shimojishima Coral Hotel fills a renovated former ANA staff lodge on Shimoji with 16 semi-doubles, from ¥9,900 for two in October 2026 (Jalan). Meals are at the Sashiba restaurant a minute's walk away. The front door closes at 22:30, or 21:00 on Thursdays, though a back door stays open, and rooms get cleaned every seven days. Road riders who fly into Shimojishima can rent a folding bike from Shimasora Pottering at the airport for ¥3,000 a day.

What about Ikema, Kurima and the east coast?

These are the stays for a car and a slow few days. Crystal Villa Ikema keeps three rooms over the sea north of Miyako, and its February plans came with a barbecue dinner at the villa, from ¥62,000 for two (Jalan). Book Room A for its own pool. Ikema takes the full north wind in winter, so the deck turns cool on a blowy evening. The airport is about 40 minutes away.

Kurima Resort Seawood Hotel has 169 rooms, 26 of them villa types with their own pools, and a planetarium dome on the grounds. The pool-villa breakfast plan was ¥50,580 for two (Jalan). It suits families. The main pool stays shut until 16 March. The Kurima loop is 12 km from Maehama, and Okinawa Soba Marukami takes names on a whiteboard before it opens. Back across the bridge at Yonaha Maehama, the Tokyu suits families on the beach at ¥47,344 for two with breakfast on the 90-day early plan, and its transfer needs booking three days ahead.

On the east coast at Gusukube, every one of The Rescape's 38 rooms has a private pool looking out to sea. Its February breakfast plan at ¥39,000 for two left those pools unheated, and ¥59,000 bought the short-course dinner as well (Jalan). Guesthouse Chikyujin no Kyukeijo at Fukuzato is the cheapest bed we list on Miyako, a local couple's place at ¥7,000 for two, room only (Jalan). Rakuten puts it near Yoshino Beach and says it takes no cards. You'll want a car, since the east-coast buses run only a handful of times a day.

What does the accommodation tax add?

Okinawa's accommodation tax starts on 1 February 2027 at 2% of the per-person room-only rate, capped at ¥2,000 a night. All five islands here belong to Miyakojima City, which takes 1.2% of that itself, so the total stays at 2% (Okinawa Prefecture, updated 2 October 2026). At Smile Hotel's ¥10,032 for two, room only, that comes to about ¥100 each.
