Yonaguni-jima is Japan's westernmost island and lies about 111 km from Taiwan; 1,654 people live on its 28.82 km² of cliffs and pasture, which you reach by air from Naha or Ishigaki or by a four-hour ferry from Ishigaki.
Yonaguni is the last of Japan before Taiwan. The tourism association puts Taiwan 111 km from Irizaki at the western tip, and on a few clear days a year its mountains show on the horizon. The town counted 1,654 people at the end of June 2026 in three villages: Sonai on the north coast with the town office, Kubura on the west with the fishing port and the ferry, and Higawa on the south. A Ground Self-Defense Force coastal surveillance unit has been stationed on the island since 2016.
The island speaks its own language. Dunan munui has the fewest vowels of any Japonic language, three in all, and UNESCO classed it as severely endangered in 2009. The island's history includes the head tax that the Ryukyu court levied on Miyako and Yaeyama from 1637 until 1903, and its weight survives in stories such as the one told at the coastal crevasse of Kubura-bari, just north of Kubura.
For a visitor the island splits into cliffs and sea. On land you have the cape at Agarizaki with its lighthouse and grazing Yonaguni horses, the Sanninudai coast and Tachigami-iwa, and the long view from Tindabana over Sonai. Underwater there are hammerheads in winter off Irizaki and the stepped rock formation off Arakawa-bana that divers call the Iseki point, which most specialists in marine archaeology and landforms read as natural rock.
Getting there
Ryukyu Air Commuter flies to Yonaguni twice a day from Naha and three times a day from Ishigaki, according to the tourism association's March 2026 listing, and you book through JAL. Fukuyama Kaiun's Ferry Yonakuni sails from Ishigaki twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, and takes about four hours to Kubura.
Getting around
A town bus loops Sonai, Kubura and Higawa. Several firms rent cars, among them Saiseitan Kanko and Mumbu Rent-a-car opposite the airport and Yonehama at the airport and Sonai, and the tourism association advises booking ahead because fleets are small. Yonaguni Honda in Sonai rents bicycles and scooters, and Mimizu Rent-a-car and Matsukawa in Kubura rent e-bikes. The island has no convenience stores.
Riding on Yonaguni-jima
Prefectural Route 216 circles Yonaguni, and Wikipedia reckons a bicycle can ride the whole island in three to four hours despite steep ground. The island rises to 231.4 m at Urabu-dake and the south coast is a line of cliffs, so expect climbing between Higawa and Agarizaki. Yonaguni horses graze the open pastures at Agarizaki and around the south, and they wander onto the road without hurry.
Yonaguni Honda (Sonai) rents bicycles; Mimizu Rent-a-car and Matsukawa (Kubura) rent e-bikes.
December to March
Yonaguni is windier in winter than Ishigaki or Iriomote. JMA's 1991–2020 normals give February a mean of 19.0 °C, an average high of 21.3 °C and a mean wind of 7.6 m/s from the north-north-east, with about 60 hours of sunshine. The same months bring the island's dive season: Sawes Yonaguni's season chart marks November to May for hammerheads, puts the water at 22–23 °C from January to April and recommends a 5 mm suit. The north wind leaves the south coast in the lee, and the monument dive site off that coast becomes reachable more often than in summer.
Worth knowing
- Rental cars sell out first, so book one as soon as you have flights; the tourism association lists firms that only take bookings after you hold flight and room reservations.
- Dinner places in Sonai and Kubura fill fast and several close on Sundays, so book on arrival or the day before.
- Drive and ride slowly through the pastures: Yonaguni horses stand in the road and even stop the island bus.
- Camping, including sleeping in a car, is banned on Yonaguni.
