Higawa
比川24°27′ N 122°59′ EVillageYonaguni-jima
Higawa is the smallest of Yonaguni's three villages, on the south coast below Kubura-dake 15–20 minutes by car from the airport, and it is known for its two soba shops and the open-air set of the drama 'Dr. Koto Shinryojo'.
Higawa sits in a bay on the south coast, among horse pastures and a kuruma prawn farm. The village is smaller than Sonai or Kubura, and it drew a new wave of visitors after Fuji TV filmed 'Dr. Koto Shinryojo' here; the clinic set still stands on the beach and the village co-op store looks after it.
Lunch is the reason to stop. Wakana Soba makes Yonaguni soba with a pork-bone broth from its own pigs until it sells out, Satoya next door to its inn serves Yaeyama soba with local kuruma prawns, and Kaede Shokudo cooks set meals and azami (thistle) noodles through the afternoon.
East of Higawa the road climbs onto the open south-east coast towards Tachigami-iwa and Agarizaki.
