Ryusen was founded in 1973 to revive bingata and pass on Okinawan dyeing, and the Okinawa Convention and Visitors Bureau describes it as the only place to try coral dyeing. You press fossil coral of different sizes onto the fabric to build a pattern, then dab in colour with a cloth pad called a tampo. The piece dries in time to carry out with you.
