Niraikanai Bridge

The Niraikanai Bridge in Chinen, Nanjo is a pair of road bridges about 660 m long and 80 m high that swing down from the Tsukishiro hills to the coast road with a view over the Pacific to Kudaka-jima.
The name joins two bridges, the Nirai and the Kanai, that run one after the other, and together they take Prefectural Route 86 off the plateau and down to Route 331 in one big curve. Nirai Kanai is the Okinawan name for the ideal land beyond the sea. Heading down from Tsukishiro you come through a tunnel and the whole of the Chinen coast opens up in front of you, with Kudaka floating out on the horizon.
On a bike the curve makes a fast, open descent toward the sea, and the same road is a climb when you ride it the other way from the coast. The bridge has no parking, so drivers who slow for the view share the lane with you; keep left and watch the mirrors.
Worth knowing
- Sefa-utaki and Chinen Misaki Park both sit close to the foot of the bridge on Route 331.
- The northeast wind of December to March blows across the open span; hold your line on the descent.
- Nanjo closes the bridge in typhoons and severe weather.
