Where should you base a cycling week on Okinawa's main island?
Nago puts a Tour de Okinawa course and the Motobu peninsula on your doorstep, and Naha covers the first and last nights. We compared the stays in Naha, Onna and Yomitan, Motobu and Kouri, and Nago on what they offer riders and which routes each one puts in reach.
By Ride Okinawa · Updated 2026-10

Base a cycling week on Okinawa's main island in Nago, where the Tour de Okinawa's introductory course starts beside the city hall and the Motobu peninsula loop leaves from the same corner. Book a night or two in Naha at each end for the airport and the bike shops. None of the 134 stays in our listings publishes a bike wash area or a written welcome for guests' own bikes, so we compared what they do publish: rental bikes, drying rooms, in-room washers and whether they'll hold a bike box sent ahead.
We read the stays' own pages and their Jalan listings in October 2026 and measured the rides with our route data. Nobody from Ride Okinawa stayed at these hotels for this piece. Prices are Jalan's lowest two-adult totals on the February 2027 nights we sampled, before Okinawa's accommodation tax.
How do the four bases compare?
| Base | Stays with something for riders | What they offer | Rides in reach | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nago | Hotel Yugaf Inn Okinawa, Oriental Hotel Okinawa, Kanucha Bay | Free bikes 7:00–19:00 at the Yugaf Inn; share-bikes and e-bikes at the Oriental's door | Warumi and Kouri bridges, 42.5 km; Motobu Peninsula loop, 63.3 km | The Yugaf Inn had no February 2027 rates up in October |
| Motobu and Kouri | Hotel Mahaina, Hilton Sesoko, Orion Motobu, Minshuku Maruya | Paid rental bikes; a paid drying room at the Hilton; covered two-wheeler parking at Maruya | Yaedake climb, 12 km; Kouri and Yagaji loop, 18.6 km | 90–100 minutes from the airport |
| Onna and Yomitan | Hotel Nikko Alivila, BEB5 Seragaki, Ernesto Zanpa | E-bikes in two sizes and a drying room at Alivila; a washer-dryer in every BEB5 room | Chatan seawall to Cape Zanpa, 50 km; the Kaichu Doro by car | Route 58 carries the coast traffic |
| Naha | OMO5 Okinawa Naha, Guesthouse BASE okinawa, Okinawa Hotel | OMO5 takes parcels the day before you arrive; house bikes and a drying room at BASE | Naha to Cape Kyan, 59.1 km; Naminoue loop, 8.6 km | City streets at the start and end of every ride |

Why is Nago the best base for a riding week?
Nago sits where the riding starts. The Tour de Okinawa's Warumi and Kouri bridges course leaves from Minato 1-chome by the city hall, and our version runs 42.5 km with 383 m of climbing over the Warumi Ohashi and the 1,960 m Kouri Bridge. The Motobu Peninsula loop starts at the same corner and measures 63.3 km with 620 m of climbing. HUBCYCLE OKINAWA repairs any bike and rents road bikes 700 m into the Warumi route.
Hotel Yugaf Inn Okinawa is the rider's pick in town. Jalan's facility list shows free bicycles for guests from 7:00 to 19:00 (Jalan, October 2026). Its 121 twins sit three minutes on foot from the beach and within ten of Nago Bus Terminal. It suits road riders on a budget and anyone in town for Tour de Okinawa weekend. The cheapest nights Jalan showed in October came to ¥7,200 for two, but the hotel hadn't opened its February 2027 plans then, and it publishes nothing about keeping your own bike, so ask when you book.
Oriental Hotel Okinawa Resort & Spa at Kise suits families and e-bike days. Two services stand at its front entrance: Chura Chari share-bikes at ¥220 per 30 minutes or ¥1,650 for a day pass, and GREEN RIDE OKINAWA e-bikes at ¥1,500 an hour from 9:00 to 17:00 (hotel FAQ, October 2026). Chura Chari needs a smartphone that receives Japanese SMS and a credit card, which rules it out for a lot of visitors. Jalan's lowest February night was ¥34,580 for two on 3 February.
Kanucha Bay Hotel & Villas faces the other coast at Abu, with Route 331 running north toward Higashi and the Yanbaru forest climbs. Paid rental bikes cover the gentle days, and Jalan's lowest February total was ¥28,000 for two. It publishes no policy on guests' own bikes, so ask where yours can sleep. Further down Route 58, The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa lists bicycle rental at ¥1,500, though at ¥82,226 for two on 3 February it's a splurge for a riding week.
What does Motobu or Kouri put in reach?
Motobu gives you the climbing. The Yaedake climb is a 12 km out-and-back with 500 m of climbing and a steepest pitch of 16% by our route data, and about 7,000 kanhizakura cherry trees along it flower from late January. The Kouri and Yagaji loop is the easy morning, 18.6 km with 165 m of climbing over the Kouri Bridge. e-CHARIty Okinawa delivers e-bikes to stays in Nago, Nakijin and Motobu from ¥5,800.
Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa is the budget family choice, five minutes by car from Churaumi, and Jalan's lowest February total was ¥18,180 for two on the 17th and the 21st (Jalan). It rents bicycles for a fee, and its indoor pool stays open through the winter. The airport is about 100 minutes away. Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort sits across the Sesoko Bridge with paid rental bikes and a paid drying room, from ¥26,604 for two on 3 February (Jalan). A direct bus runs there from the airport, which helps if you're carrying a bike bag. Every ride from Sesoko starts by crossing the bridge back to Motobu. Orion Hotel Motobu stands at Bise where the peninsula loop passes the door, from ¥35,200 for two, and it publishes no bike policy at all.
Minshuku Maruya in Nakijin is the cheap, well-fed option. The family behind the soba restaurant Manten next door runs it, and Jalan showed ¥7,600 for two on three of our February dates (Jalan). Jalan lists its covered parking as space for motorbikes, so ask whether a bicycle can sleep there too. The rooms are mostly six-mat tatami rooms, which leaves little space for a bike bag. On Kouri itself, the villas we list publish nothing for riders.

What about Onna and Yomitan?
Onna and Yomitan suit a split week where some of the group wants the beach. Hotel Nikko Alivila in Yomitan rents e-bikes in 26-inch and 20-inch sizes and recommends booking ahead, since numbers are limited (Alivila activities, October 2026). It has a paid drying room, and Jalan's lowest February total was ¥31,600 for two on the 17th. The lanes inland toward Zakimi Castle and Yachimun-no-Sato make good e-bike country.
BEB5 Okinawa Seragaki puts a drum washer-dryer and a kitchen in every one of its 105 rooms. None of our main-island stays publishes a bike wash, so a room with its own washer-dryer is the nearest thing to cyclist service. Hoshino Resorts quoted from ¥5,175 per person per night in October 2026, though no February room rate was showing yet (BEB5). The heated outdoor pool opens all year. The drawback is the road outside. Route 58 carries the traffic up the Onna coast, and our main-island riding guide tells you to stay off it where you can.
Ernesto Zanpa is a three-storey house near Cape Zanpa let whole to groups of up to seven, with electric-assist bikes for hire from the owners (Ernesto Zanpa). Jalan showed ¥28,214 for two, room only, on 3 and 17 February. You cook for yourselves. From here the Chatan seawall ride runs 50 km with 238 m of climbing, and Cycle Plaza Ikehara in Ishikawa rents road bikes for ¥3,000 a day on the way to the Kaichu Doro. The Moon Beach Museum Resort in Onna adds a paid drying room, from ¥27,840 for two on 3 February.

When does Naha make sense?
Naha covers the first and last nights, and it suits riders who want the south. The Naha to Cape Kyan loop starts at Onoyama Park and runs 59.1 km with 379 m of climbing past the Peace Memorial Park. The Nanjo coast loop over the Niraikanai Bridge starts at Ojima, 23.4 km with 323 m of climbing. Every ride out of town begins in traffic.
OMO5 Okinawa Naha is the one for riders shipping a bike. The front desk takes parcels from the day before you check in, excluding cash-on-delivery and chilled items, so a box sent on from the airport waits for you (Hoshino Resorts, October 2026). Share-cycles go out for a fee, and Jalan's lowest February total was ¥18,400 for two. The hotel says nothing about keeping the bike once it's built. Guesthouse BASE okinawa near Naminoue lends house bikes and has a paid drying room, at ¥5,600 for two on 17 and 21 February (Jalan). Check-in runs 16:00–20:00 and you pay cash on arrival unless you prepaid. Okinawa Hotel in Daido rents bikes for a fee, from ¥12,600 for two on 3 February, and the climb to Shuri starts nearby.
Naha also has the shops. Ryu-Q Rental Cycle in Makishi rents road bikes for ¥3,000 a day or ¥12,400 a week and will store your bike box. Okinawa Ringyo rents GIANT and Anchor road bikes from ¥4,400 a day out of Haebaru. Our bringing your bike guide covers the flight and the box.

How should you split the week?
Spend two nights in Naha and five in Nago or Motobu. Ride the south from Naha on the first full day, then move north by car, or by bus with the bike in a rinko bag. From Nago, the Warumi course, the peninsula loop and a morning on Yaedake fill three days, and a rest day at Churaumi or on Kouri Beach fills a fourth.
Look at the tax before you compare totals. Okinawa's accommodation tax starts on 1 February 2027 at 2% of the per-person room-only rate, capped at ¥2,000 a night, and Nago, Motobu, Onna and Chatan collect part of it themselves within that same cap (Okinawa Prefecture, updated 2 October 2026).
