Oroku was its own village until 1954, when it joined Naha, and today the city runs it through its Oroku branch office. It fills the peninsula between the Kokuba River and the airport, and the US military's Naha port facility, the only American base inside Naha, sits on its northern shore.
For visitors it is the part of Naha closest to the airport, with the monorail stopping at Akamine and Oroku. Riders heading south leave the city this way, past Senaga-jima and along the coast to Toyosaki and Itoman.
