The island measures 0.18 km² and 1.8 km around, and it rises to 33 m about 600 m off the coast. Before the war it was a sacred island with a gusuku and prayer sites, and local legend has Amamikiyo stepping onto Senaga first when she came down to Tomigusuku. The US military took it in 1946 and stripped much of the limestone from the top; it came back in 1977 and was later developed for leisure.
Umikaji Terrace fills the slope with shops and cafés looking out over the East China Sea, and planes landing at Naha pass close overhead. Locals have long called the island Anjina, which tradition explains as the sandy isle of the aji lord who built the gusuku. At low tide the reef around the island drains to flats.
Worth knowing
- The island sits on the East China Sea side of Okinawa, so the sun sets over open water.
- Restaurants take last orders at 20:30.
- Check the bus times before you ride out one way; the Umikaji Liner runs between Kokusai-dori and Itoman.
