Shimoji is the airport island of 99 residents, and Miyako's winter cave dives lie off its west coast.
Shimoji has almost no village of its own; 99 people were registered on the island at the start of 2025, and most of the land belongs to Shimojishima Airport. The terminal opened on 30 March 2019, and its café before security is open to anyone. Cars are barred from the runway perimeter road, so you walk to 17END from the free car park.
On the west coast the two Toriike sinkholes join underwater and open to the sea, and islanders treat the tsunami boulder Obiiwa as sacred. Offshore, Toriike, Antonio Gaudi and Maou no Kyuden make up the three famous terrain dives, and they run from September to April when the north wind leaves this coast calm.
