Ueno is the south-coast district of Miyako-jima that holds the Shigira resort, and its Miyaguni villagers rescued a German ship's crew in 1873.
Ueno was a village of 18.98 km² and 3,274 people when it merged into Miyakojima City in 2005. It formed in 1948 from parts of Miyaguni, Shinzato, Nobaru and Kadekaru that split from Shimoji. In July 1873 a typhoon drove the German merchant ship R. J. Robertson onto the reef off Miyaguni, and villagers rowed out through heavy seas to save the crew and cared for them for about a month; Kaiser Wilhelm I later sent a warship and a memorial.
Today Ueno is resort country around Shigira, and it keeps a handful of good local tables. Miyako Soba Massugu in Ueno village is one of the few soba shops that takes cards, and Hirochan in Miyaguni keeps serving until nine. Utopia Farm and Shima Cafe Tunkaraya do the sweets and the sea view.
