Kondoi Beach

Kondoi Beach on Taketomi's west coast is a long, shallow stretch of white sand that looks across to Iriomote and its neighbours, and it suits a calm swim at mid to high tide and a walk to the offshore sandbar at low tide. It is not an official swimming beach and has no lifeguards.

Kondoi faces west, so Iriomote, Kohama, Kuroshima and the smaller islands line up across the water, and the evening light is famous. The sea shelves so gently that low tide leaves too little water to swim, and a sandbar rises offshore that you can wade out to. TripAdvisor's 2019 list of Japan's best beaches put it third.
The beach has showers, changing rooms, toilets and a shelter, and from late March to about October Yutaka Parlor's white bus sells drinks and shaved ice and rents parasols and snorkel sets. Snorkellers will find little coral or fish here.
Before you swim
- Not an official swimming beach: swim at your own risk
- Very shallow at low tide
- Few corals or fish, so poor snorkelling
December to March
From November to late March the beach bus and rentals stop, and the beach goes quiet. JMA's 1991–2020 normal for the sea south of Ishigaki sits at about 23 °C in February. Kondoi faces west, so the winter north-east wind comes over the island behind you.
