Is Taketomi worth a day from Ishigaki?
Yes. The boat takes 10 to 15 minutes and the island is flat, so a rental bike covers the red-tiled village and the west-coast beaches in a morning; stay one night if you want the lanes after the day boats leave and the sunset from Nishi Pier.

Yes. The boat from Ishigaki takes 10 to 15 minutes, and on an island that tops out at about 33 m a rental bike gets you round the red-tiled village and the west-coast beaches at Kondoi and Kaiji in a morning. Stay one night if you want the lanes after the day boats have gone, because in February the sun goes down over Iriomote at about 18:30 to 18:45, and the last boat back to Ishigaki has already left at 17:50.
We built this from the Taketomi Town Tourism Association's listings, the two ferry companies' winter timetables, the Japan Tourism Agency's text on the Taketomi Charter and reporting in the Ryukyu Shimpo, all read in October 2026. Nobody from Ride Okinawa visited the island for this piece, and the sunset times come from our own calculation.
Should you go for the day or stay the night?
Stay the night if your Ishigaki plans allow it, though a day trip still covers the island. Both ferry companies run the crossing about once an hour through the winter, from 7:30 out of Ishigaki to 17:50 back from Taketomi, and an adult return costs ¥1,880 (Anei Kanko winter timetable). The site's ferry page has the full timetable.
| A day from Ishigaki | One night on Taketomi | |
|---|---|---|
| Boats | 7:30 first out, 17:50 last back, winter 2026/27 | Any sailing back the next day |
| Fare | ¥1,880 adult return | ¥970 each way, or the return |
| The village | Fullest from late morning to mid-afternoon | Quiet in the evening and before the first boat lands |
| Bikes | Back by 16:30 at Nitta Kanko and 17:00 at Maruhachi | Tomori Kanko rents a standard bike for 24 hours at ¥2,200 |
| Sunset at Nishi Pier | Falls after the last boat in February, by our calculation | An easy ride from any inn in the village |
| Food | Lunch at Takenoko, Yarabo or Garden Asahi | Dinner at your inn, then Chirorin Mura until midnight |
The island's minshuku keep a night affordable. The tourism association lists Nitta-so at ¥8,500 per person with two meals in January 2026, and Minshuku Kohama-so has put islanders' dinners on the table since 1965. HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island sits at the other end of the scale, with 48 cottages and a heated pool open all year. The day boats fill the lanes from late morning, and the village you see at 7:00 or after dark belongs to the 311 people the town counted at the end of August 2026 (Taketomi Town register).

Who will enjoy Taketomi?
Taketomi suits anyone who likes a slow pace and doesn't mind riding a bike on sand. Families do well here, since the island is flat and Kondoi's water stays shallow far out. Snorkellers should look elsewhere, because Kondoi has few corals or fish.
In the village, single-storey houses sit under red tile behind walls of stacked coral, and the lanes between them are spread with white sand that residents sweep. Japan made the village an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1987, and the whole island lies inside Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park (Japan Tourism Agency). Our page on the village townscape has its history.
What rules did the islanders set for visitors?
The islanders wrote the Taketomi Charter themselves in 1986 and revised it in 2017, and its five principles ask them not to sell, dirty, disturb or destroy the island, and to keep its festivals and crafts alive (Japan Tourism Agency). Its first principle asks residents never to sell or carelessly rent island land and houses to outsiders.
Visitors get a shorter list. The Japan Tourism Agency's Taketomi text sets out six requests (Japanese text):
- Take your rubbish home with you.
- Stay outside the stone walls around the houses, which are private homes.
- Don't walk through the village in swimwear or with bare skin showing.
- Sleep only in licensed lodgings, so no camping or sleeping out.
- Look at flowers, shells, fish and butterflies without taking them.
- Keep out of the utaki sacred groves, which islanders call On.
Bring a cover-up for the ride back from the beach, since the lanes count as the village. At Kaiji, look at the star sand in your palm and brush it back, because the shell rule covers those tiny skeletons too.

Do you have to pay to land on Taketomi?
You're asked to. Since 1 September 2019 Taketomi has asked each visitor for a voluntary ¥300 entry fee, which you pay at ticket machines in Ishigaki's island terminal or at Taketomi port (Ryukyu Shimpo, 2019). A foundation for the island's natural assets collects it, and up to a third can go toward buying back land that outside companies acquired. When the fee began, the island drew about 500,000 visitors a year, and the foundation aimed for 40% of them to pay.
In June 2025 the town assembly passed a visitor tax of ¥1,000 per visit to any of the town's inhabited islands, with a ¥5,000 annual pass, and exemptions for residents, commuters, school trips and preschool children (Ryukyu Shimpo, June 2025). The tax needs the internal affairs minister's consent, and in June 2026 the ministry still hadn't given it, citing doubts over the residents' exemption and the way the tax would be collected (Ryukyu Shimpo, June 2026). We found no report of collection starting by October 2026. Check before a February trip, because the town planned ticket machines at the Ishigaki terminal and online payment (Ryukyu Shimpo, March 2025).

How do you get round the island?
Rent a bike. Yaeyama Kanko Ferry's fast boats have no room for bicycles (Yaeyama Kanko Ferry FAQ), and the island's rental shops send vans to meet the boats. Maruhachi Rental Cycle in the middle of the village charges ¥1,000 for two hours on a city bike or ¥2,000 flat from four hours, and ¥1,600 or ¥3,200 for an e-bike. It takes no phone bookings and wants the bike back by 17:00 (tourism association). Nitta Kanko rents city bikes only, with ¥2,000 as its ceiling, and sends out its last bike at 15:00 (Nitta Kanko). Tomori Kanko wants you to register online before you arrive. Minemoto Rental Cycle sits three minutes' walk from the port, and the tourism association lists it as able to help in English.
The white sand grabs at narrow tyres, so take the widest tyres on offer or an e-bike, and ride the village lanes at walking pace. Our village lanes and beaches loop runs 4.3 km by our route data, and the morning ride day takes it clockwise to Kaiji first.
The water-buffalo carts are the other way to see the village. Taketomi Kanko Center runs them from 8:45 to 16:35 with a free shuttle from the port, and it takes cashless payment only (Taketomi Kanko Center). Mapple's February 2025 listing put the ride at about 30 minutes from ¥3,300 (Mapple). Nitta Kanko has suspended its own carts. If you'd rather sit, Taketomi-jima Kotsu runs a route bus at ¥300 a ride and a one-hour guided tour at ¥2,800 that stops at Kaiji and ends with a walk in the village (tourism association).
Island
Taketomi-jima
Taketomi-jima is a flat 5.4 km² island 10 to 15 minutes by boat from Ishigaki, where about 310 people live in a protected village of red-tiled houses and white sand lanes. Visitors cycle it on rental bikes and stay for the sunset at Nishi pier.

What are Kondoi and Kaiji like?
Swim at Kondoi at mid to high tide, and walk at Kaiji next door, where the current runs fast. Kondoi Beach faces west across very shallow water toward Iriomote and Kohama, and at low tide a sandbar rises offshore that you can wade to. It has showers and toilets, and nobody lifeguards it. Yutaka Parlor's bus rents parasols and snorkel sets there from late March to about October, so bring your own drinks in February.
Kaiji Beach sits just south, with trees for shade and the star sand along its rocky edges. From there it's a short ride north to Nishi Pier. Islanders built it by hand in 1938 to sail to their fields on Iriomote, and Japan registered it as a cultural property in 2005 (tourism association). The old lookout tower Nagomi-no-to has been closed to climbers since 2016.
For lunch, Takenoko has served Yaeyama soba since 1975 and opens from 10:30 until the noodles run out (tourism association). Yarabo closes on Wednesdays. Kanifu opens every day and takes cashless payment only, and Parlor Painushima does shaved ice until 17:30.

What is Taketomi like in February?
It's mild and breezy, and the beach rentals have packed up for the winter. The nearest JMA station stands on Ishigaki, and its 1991–2020 normals give February a mean high of 22.0 °C and a low of 17.2 °C, with the wind from the north-north-east at a mean of 5.4 m/s (JMA). Kondoi and Kaiji face west, so that wind blows over the island behind you. Pack a windproof layer for the boat and for the evening at the pier. Our riding climate page has the rest of the year.
Boats sail all winter, and Yaeyama Kanko Ferry stops only at 15 m/s of wind or 3.0 m waves (Yaeyama Kanko Ferry FAQ). The seed-sowing festival Tanadui closes Minemoto and Taketomi-jima Kotsu for its two days, and in 2026 it falls on 12 and 13 November by Rurubu's listing (Rurubu), well clear of February.
Quick answers
How long do you need on Taketomi?
A morning covers Taketomi on a rental bike, since the island is flat and our village and beaches loop runs 4.3 km. A full day leaves time for lunch and the beach at Kondoi. Stay one night to see the village after the day boats leave and the sunset from Nishi Pier.
Is there an entry fee for Taketomi Island?
Yes. Since 1 September 2019 Taketomi has asked visitors for a voluntary ¥300 entry fee, paid at ticket machines in Ishigaki's island terminal or at Taketomi port. The town also passed a ¥1,000 visitor tax in June 2025, which still lacked national government consent in June 2026.
Can you wear a swimsuit in Taketomi village?
No. The rules the Japan Tourism Agency publishes for Taketomi ask visitors not to walk through the village in swimwear or with bare skin showing. Bring a cover-up for the ride back from Kondoi Beach.
Can you see the sunset on a day trip to Taketomi?
Not in February. The last boat back to Ishigaki leaves Taketomi at 17:50 on the 2026/27 winter timetables, and by our calculation the sun sets at about 18:30 to 18:45 that month. Stay the night to watch it from Nishi Pier.
