Ikema

Ikema is a 2.80 km² fishing island of 468 people that the 1,425 m Ikema Ohashi joins to Miyako-jima's north-west tip, and Okinawa's largest wetland fills its centre.
Ikema curves like a horseshoe around the 38 ha Ikema Wetland. The wetland was once an inlet, and it turned to fresh water after reclamation dykes in the 1920s and 1930s and the fishing-port works of 1963–1982 sealed it off. The whole island became a national wildlife protection area in 2011. Bonito fishing began here in 1906, and katsuobushi, dried bonito, is still the island's product.
Ikema people spread across the region in the 18th and 19th centuries, to Sarahama on Irabu and to Nishihara and Nagama on Miyako, and their descendants count as Ikema people too. The Myaakuzutsu festival runs for three days in the ninth lunar month at four sacred sites. Offshore to the north, the great Yabiji reef surfaces at the spring tides.
Getting there
Cross the 1,425 m Ikema Ohashi from Karimata at the north-west tip of Miyako-jima. The drive from Miyako Airport takes about 30 minutes.
Getting around
By bike, car or on foot; the island is small and flat, with the harbour and village by the bridge.
Riding on Ikema
Ikema is a horseshoe-shaped island with 10.1 km of coastline and a high point of 28 m, so a loop is short and flat. The ride out over the Ikema Ohashi from Karimata faces the winter north wind and the ride home gets it behind you. Stop at Kaimiru by the bridge and Ninufa for gelato with a sea view.
Bring a bike from Hirara; Aoyagi Cycle's mobile repairs cover Ikema.
December to March
Yabiji reef tours from Ikema port do not run in winter, when the north wind blows, and Ninufa closes on bad-weather days. The bridge closes only under a storm warning with winds of 25 m/s or more.
Worth knowing
- Lunch at Ikema Shokudo in the Yabiji Center at the harbour; it serves only from 11:00 to 14:00.
- Funakusu Beach on the north side is mapped on OpenStreetMap; ask locally about currents before you swim.
