Prefectural Route 235 runs east from Shigira through Ueno and Gusukube above a string of coves, dipping to Imgya Marine Garden and Boraga Beach and climbing back to the plateau, which is where our route data finds most of the 354 m of climbing.
Higashi-Hennazaki points 2 km into the Pacific and is never wider than 250 m. It became a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 2007, and the wind is constant enough that the plant life on the raised coral grows flat. At the end stands Hennazaki Lighthouse, which you can climb for the view over about 320 degrees of open sea.
Riding back the same way gives you the coves from the other side. Stop at Boraga for a swim, and finish with smoothies at Tunkaraya or a late lunch at Hirochan near the resort.
Worth knowing
- Leave in the dark for sunrise at the lighthouse; the cape faces east over open water.
- The lighthouse closes for an hour at lunch, so arrive in the morning or after one.
- Easter lilies flower along the cape path in early spring.
Ride safely
- The cape spur has sea on both sides and no shelter; ride it slowly in strong wind and watch for opening car doors at the car park.
- Carry water from Ueno. A seasonal shop by the cape car park opens only in busy months.
- In the dark before sunrise use front and rear lights; the coast road has few street lights.
