Ginowan is a city of about 100,000 people in central Okinawa, wrapped around US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, which takes up about a quarter of its land. Its coast holds the Okinawa Convention Center and Tropical Beach, and Kakazu Ridge, where one of the biggest fights of the Battle of Okinawa took place, is now a hilltop park.
Futenma air station sits in the middle of Ginowan and covers 4.83 km², about 25 percent of the city, nearly all of it private land leased from some 2,800 owners. Everything else wraps around it. About 4 km of Route 330 is lined with used-car lots, and locals call it the used-car highway.
On the west coast, Ginowan Seaside Park sits beside the Okinawa Convention Center and Tropical Beach, and the area hosts island-wide events. Inland, Kakazu Takadai Park keeps a pillbox and trench from the fighting of April 1945, when about half the people of Kakazu died. King Tacos opened a branch in the Kiyuna district in 2024.
