Kohama village is home to 704 of Kohama island's 802 residents, according to the town register for August 2026, and most of the island's small restaurants sit in its lanes of red-tiled houses.
The village sits inland from Kohama port with Ufudaki rising behind it, and many of its houses keep their red tiles. Its festival performances, Tanadui among them, became Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties in 2007, and old weaving traditions continue here. The Sugar Road begins at the village edge and runs through the cane toward the sea.
Most of the island's places to eat sit here or by the port. Yashi no Ki serves curry until 19:30 except on Thursdays and Fridays, and Satoukibi opens for dinner from 18:00 except Mondays and Sundays. At the port, BOB's CAFE and Coyote cover the wait for the boat.
Kohama-jima post office stands in the village. The hills start as soon as you leave the port, so many visitors take an e-bike or a small rental car.
