Nago sits where the expressway runs out at the Kyoda interchange and Route 58 carries on north up the coast. The present city formed in August 1970 when Nago town merged with the villages of Yabu, Kushi, Haneji and Yagaji, so it reaches from the East China Sea right across to Henoko and Oura Bay on the Pacific side. Orion Beer, founded in 1957, still brews here. In the old town the main street splits around the Hinpun Gajumaru, a banyan of about 300 years that has been a national natural monument since 1997.
In late January the hikanzakura flower on the hill of Nago Castle above the old town, and the Nago Sakura Matsuri fills the streets below for a weekend. The rest of the year Nago works as the service town of the north, with the bus terminal and the big supermarkets.
For a rider it is the obvious base. Route 84 climbs west from here to the Motobu soba road. The Yagaji and Kouri bridges lie a short way north, and Route 58 carries on through Ogimi to Cape Hedo. The east coast through Oura toward Higashi is quieter still.
