The whole island is one district, Tamagusuku Ou, and about 870 people lived here in April 2021, in lanes that twist up a low hill. There is no school, so children cross the bridge every morning to Tamagusuku's primary and junior high schools. The life of the place is the port and the Imaiyu fish market, where the catch is sold and cooked.
Visitors come for tempura at Nakamoto and Ohshiro and for the glass-bottom boat over the reef. The Kannon-do on the hill holds an image of Kannon given by a Chinese crew the islanders rescued in the seventeenth or eighteenth century.

What does the name Ojima village mean?
Ojima village comes from the local name Ou, meaning island of ō, the old word for the yellowish light of the dead. The whole island is the district of Tamagusuku-aza-Ou; an inland district of the same name also exists.
