Paness is Yonaguni's only bakery and a small café in Sonai, about seven minutes by car from the airport, that sells bread from about 8:30 and lunch until 17:00 and closes on Tuesdays.
Paness opened in January 2021 and is the island's one bakery, in a cute Western-style building with a melon-pan banner outside. The tourism association lists five colours of melon pan, from chomeiso (a coastal herb grown on the island) to beni-imo and kokuto, plus rusks and a soft 'baby's bottom' bun. Lunch, soba or a plate, runs until 17:00 while it lasts. Bread is on sale from about 8:30, early enough to stock a bag before a ride.
