Agarizaki
東崎24°28′ N 123°03′ ECapeGood with kids
Agarizaki is the cape at the eastern end of Yonaguni, where a cliff rises about 100 m above the sea below a lighthouse and an open pasture grazed by Yonaguni horses.
Agarizaki ends in white cliffs about 100 m high, with the Agarizaki lighthouse and a viewing platform at the tip. The land behind is a gently rolling pasture where Yonaguni horses and cattle graze, and on a clear day Iriomote shows to the east. The tourism association recommends it for sunrise.
The horses are a native breed, small at 110–120 cm, and a town natural monument since 1969. They fell to 59 animals in 1975 and recovered to about 130 by 2018 under a preservation society. They are used to people and cars, so walk around them and give them room.
Worth knowing
- Keep food out of sight around the horses, and drive at walking pace through the pasture.
