Tachigami-iwa stands alone in the sea at the south-west end of the Sanninudai coast, a 1.3 km run of cliffs and stepped sandstone that became a national natural monument and scenic place in February 2024. The rock rises about 20 m, its horizontal layers clear in the light, and islanders have long treated it as a place where gods arrive. A legend tells of a young man who climbed it for seabirds' eggs, could not get down, prayed, fell asleep and woke on the shore.
The tourism association points to two viewpoints: a deck with steps about 600 m west of the Sanninudai car park, with toilets, and a second spot about 500 m further west that looks down on the rock. Gunkan-iwa, shaped like a warship, lies at the other end of the same coast.
Worth knowing
- Treat the rock as sacred; look from the viewpoints and leave it unclimbed.
