Tindabana stands like a folding screen behind Sonai, a cliff about 70 m above the houses with a cap of Ryukyu limestone over older sandstone. Springs seep out between the layers, and the water drawn here opens the year in the island's Aramidi rite each eighth lunar month. The tradition makes it the home of Sanai Isoba, the woman chief who ruled the island in the late 15th century.
A cave called Inugan holds Yonaguni's dog-ancestor legend, in which a castaway woman and a fisherman from Kohama found the island's families. The view takes in the whole village and Nanta beach below.
Worth knowing
- The spring is a sacred site; look, and leave the water undisturbed.
