Ryugu is a sata-andagi specialist with a café inside the Heiwa-dori arcade in Makishi, Naha, where the Okinawan doughnuts are fried in view and sell from ¥150 each. The shop opens 10:30–18:00 and closes on the third Thursday of the month.

Ryugu has made sata-andagi since 1989 and fried them in front of the old Makishi public market until 2021, then moved into the Heiwa-dori arcade on 1 October that year with a frying window and a café modelled on an old Okinawan house. The dough uses the shop's own blend of several flours with fresh eggs. The plain and brown-sugar andagi cost ¥150 each, and the coconut and black-sesame kinako versions cost ¥190. Sit down for an Okinawa zenzai (¥780) of kintoki beans, pressed barley, mung beans and brown sugar under a tall heap of fluffy ice.
A second Ryugu on the Sunrise Naha shopping street, at Makishi 3-4-12, keeps the same hours.
What to order
- Hot brown-sugar sata-andagi
- Okinawa zenzai
Worth knowing
- Buy them hot from the window and eat as you walk. The shop says its andagi are made to taste good cold too, so a bag travels well on a ferry day.
