Chabana is Yoron's town centre on the west coast, about seven minutes by car from the airport and port, where Ginza-dori and nearly all of the island's izakaya sit within a few streets of the sea.
Chabana is where Yoron goes out. The short main street, Ginza-dori, took its name in the boom years before Okinawa's reversion in 1972, when Yoron was the southernmost island in Japan and visitors crowded the town. The town office and the island's only traffic light are here, and Chabana beach, a sunset spot, lies at the bottom of the town.
Evenings run on izakaya and on Yoron kenpo, the island's welcome toast with kokuto shochu. Arimura Shuzo is the island's one distillery, and it makes Shima Yusen in the middle of town and sells its range on weekdays, and Izakaya Hyokin will keep a bottle for you. Book ahead at the busy rooms, such as Kayoi Bune, which fills with island regulars, and Shisa-ya, which stocks around 500 kinds of island spirits and awamori.
Mornings start at Meedafu's Yui, which opens at 6:00 and serves the island's one breakfast menu, and lunch can be the takoyaki curry or the Nikoniko rice at Kaigan-dori near Chabana beach.
