Hiji Falls in Kunigami, at about 26 m the highest waterfall in Yanbaru National Park, has been closed, car park and trail included, since heavy rain damaged the site in November 2024, with no reopening date published as of October 2026.
Heavy rain in November 2024 flooded the Hiji River and sent landslides into the Hiji district, and the Kunigami Village Tourism Association says the whole site, car park included, has been shut since. Local guides have suspended their Hiji Falls stream treks too. Residents of Hiji lost homes in the same storm, so give the area room while it rebuilds.
When it opens again, the trail runs about 40 minutes each way from a campground with raised tent platforms through tree ferns and evergreen ash. Halfway along, a wooden suspension bridge crosses the valley more than 15 m up, and a few minutes later you pass the low walls of an old charcoal kiln. The falls drop about 26 m into a pool that visitors may not enter.
Worth knowing

- Visit the Ufugi Nature Museum, also in Hiji, for the Yanbaru forest while the falls stay shut.
- Yanbaru Manabi no Mori near Aha runs a 1.5 km forest trail with a suspension bridge of its own.
