The Yanbaru World Heritage Center and Ufugi Nature Museum in Hiji, Kunigami, is the Ministry of the Environment's visitor centre for the Yanbaru forest, and it opens 10:00–17:00 except on Mondays for a ¥300 contribution.
Mounted specimens, nesting trees, sounds and film take you from the sea up the rivers into the forest, with the Yanbaru kuina and the Okinawa woodpecker at the centre. The museum also lays out what threatens them, from cars on the forest roads to the mongoose. Spend an hour here before you walk anywhere in Yanbaru National Park.
The Ministry of the Environment's Yanbaru ranger office works from the same building. It also closes on 23 June, when Okinawa holds Irei no Hi for the dead of the Battle of Okinawa.
Worth knowing
- Ask the staff where rails have been seen near the roads lately, and slow down on the forest roads at dusk.
