Residents of the west hamlet built the tower in 1953 on a mound about 6 m high in Akayama Park, and for decades its eight steep steps led to a platform big enough for two people with a view over the red roofs. It first served as a loudspeaker post for village announcements. Japan registered it as a tangible cultural property in March 2006.
The tower closed on 20 September 2016 as the concrete aged. Conservation repairs began in October 2019, and because the tower is a listed property it cannot be replaced; the climb stays closed.
Worth knowing
