Nishi Pier is a 105 m stone and concrete jetty on Taketomi's west coast that islanders built in 1938; it is now a registered cultural property, and people gather there to watch the sun set over Iriomote. It sits a short ride west of the village.

Islanders built the pier in 1938 by hand, with little government help, so they could sail to the rice fields they farmed on Iriomote, and they used it until about 1971. It runs 105.3 m out from the shore in stacked limestone faced with concrete, with a wide ramp at the end for low tide. Japan registered it as a tangible cultural property in December 2005.
Today it is Taketomi's sunset spot, and it points west with Iriomote across the water. A night on the island lets you watch the sun go down without an eye on the last boat to Ishigaki.
Worth knowing
