At low tide the water off Kondoi beach on Taketomi's west coast grows too shallow to swim, and a sandbar appears offshore that you can wade out to, with Iriomote and its neighbours across the water.

Kondoi faces west across shallow water toward Iriomote, Kohama, Kuroshima and the smaller islands. At low tide the sea drains so far that swimming stops working, and a bar of white sand rises offshore that you can wade across to and walk along.
Check the tide table on Ishigaki before you take the boat over. The bar shows best on a calm day, and in winter the north-east wind reaches Kondoi over the island from behind the beach.
Worth knowing
- Wear reef shoes for the wade out.
- Watch the returning tide; walk back before the channel fills.
