What does the name Kumejima Town mean?
Kumejima Town comes from the local name Kumijima, meaning old records write the name 球美 (Kumi); one reading ties kumi to the local word for rice. The Heibonsha historical place-name dictionary gives the local pronunciation as Kumijima, and the older spellings 球美 and 玖美 appear in several dictionaries. The island's first written mention is usually taken to be the Shoku Nihongi entry for the twelfth month of 714, which records people of Shigaki and Kumi. The Nipponica encyclopedia links the name to kumi, rice, on an island long known for its paddies, and the Kumejima tourism association tells it as Kumi no shima, praised as the most beautiful island of the Ryukyu kingdom. Both are traditions; neither source settles the question.
Is Kumejima Town a good place to stay?
Stay on the west side near Nakadomari for the ferry, the airport and local izakaya. Eef on the east side has most of the beach hotels.
