Tomari grew as a port in the Ryukyu kingdom, handling the royal government's shipping to the nearby islands, Amami and Miyako. Today Tomari port sends ferries and fast boats to Tokashiki, Zamami, Aka and Kume, and the district around it is a mix of homes and businesses.
The reason to come even without a boat is Tomari Iyumachi, the fishing port's market, where stalls sell sashimi and sushi from 6:00. Fujiya serves zenzai nearby, and Kameshima Pan opens at 6:00 for anyone catching an early ferry.
