Tomigusuku went straight from village to city in 2002, skipping town status, and it has grown fast as a commuter suburb of Naha; Toyo Keizai's growth ranking put it first in Japan in 2006 and again in 2010. It runs along the west coast south of the Manko wetland, with Senaga-jima offshore beside the airport runway and the reclaimed district of Toyosaki further south.
The city claims to be the birthplace of haari, Okinawa's dragon-boat racing. The Kyuyo chronicle says Wan Ō-so, lord of Tomigusuku castle, saw dragon boats on a visit to China and raced copies on the Manko. John Manjiro also spent half a year here in 1851 on his way home from America, which is why Tomigusuku is twinned with Tosashimizu in Kochi.
For a visitor Tomigusuku is mostly coast, from Senaga-jima by the runway to Churasun Beach on the reclaimed land at Toyosaki. The Michi-no-Eki Toyosaki roadside station has been open since December 2008, and the coast road here is the first flat stretch of the ride from Naha to Itoman.
