How do you bring your own bike to Okinawa?
All seven domestic airlines we checked fly bikes into Naha, and JAL, JTA, RAC, ANA and Skymark carry one inside your free allowance. Here's what each charges, how the monorail and buses treat a rinko bag, and where to leave the empty box.

You can fly your own bike into Naha on any of the seven domestic airlines that serve it, and on five of them it costs nothing extra if the bike box and the rest of your luggage stay inside the free allowance. JAL, its Okinawa sister airlines JTA and RAC, and Skymark each allow 20 kg in total; ANA's economy fares allow two pieces of 23 kg each. Peach charges for checked bags on its cheapest fare and adds a size option for a bike, and Jetstar Japan adds an oversize fee on top of the baggage you buy. Once you land, the bike has to travel fully bagged on the monorail and the buses, and you can leave the empty box at a counter in the airport or with a Naha rental shop for ¥880 to ¥1,000 a day.
We read the baggage rules of the seven airlines that fly into Naha Airport and the airport's own list of storage counters in October 2026, and every price here is for domestic flights.
How much does each airline charge to fly a bike to Naha?
| Airline | Free checked allowance (domestic) | Extra cost for a bike box | Size limit for a bike | Rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JAL, JTA, RAC | 20 kg per person in total, no piece limit (First Class 45 kg) | ¥440 per kg over the allowance, per journey | Normal bags 50 × 60 × 120 cm; longer sports gear only if it fits the hold (about 320 cm on a 737-800, 220 cm on a DHC-8-400, 210 cm on an ATR) | Checked bags, excess fees |
| ANA | Economy: 2 pieces of 23 kg each; Premium: 3 pieces of 32 kg | Overweight 23–32 kg ¥1,100, 32–45 kg ¥5,500; extra piece ¥5,500 | Bikes up to 292 cm (length + width + height) carry no size fee; over 203 cm, call ANA first | Bicycles, allowance |
| Skymark | 20 kg per person in total; 50 × 60 × 120 cm per piece | ¥2,000 for the first 1–10 kg over, then ¥1,000 per 10 kg | Long items up to 280 cm | Checked bags |
| Peach | None on Minimum fares; one bag on Standard and Standard Plus | Bag ¥2,000 online (Minimum fare); size option ¥1,900 online if over 203 cm; weight option ¥1,900 online for 20–32 kg | 203 cm per bag without the size option; with it, up to 80 × 80 × 230 cm | Checked bags, fees |
| Jetstar Japan | Bought separately with the fare | Oversize fee ¥2,500 when booking, ¥3,000 at the airport, per bike per flight | Any side over 1 m counts as oversize; two oversize items per person | Oversized baggage |
What does that mean for a typical road bike?
On JAL, JTA, RAC and Skymark the 20 kg has to cover the bike box and everything else you check, so weigh the packed box at home and pack the rest light, or budget for JAL's ¥440 a kilo. ANA's two-bag economy allowance is easier on cyclists, because the box can be one piece and your suitcase the other. On Peach's Minimum fare a bike box over 203 cm needs the ¥2,000 bag plus the ¥1,900 size option booked online, and the airport counter charges ¥3,100 and ¥3,000 for the same two items.
Will a small plane take my bike?
Not always. JAL lists the longest item each aircraft can load and says it can't promise space on its DHC-8-400 cargo-combi and ATR turboprops. ANA warns that bags under 203 cm may still be turned away on its DHC-8-400, and both airlines say that if the bike can't fly, you'll be asked to ship it by courier. JAL also caps a single bag at 32 kg and the total at 45 kg on its ATR42 and RAC flights.
Will the airline pay if my bike gets damaged?
Don't count on it. ANA says it isn't responsible for a bike that wasn't packed and protected properly, and Peach lists bicycles among the items it won't cover for damage. Pack the frame in a hard case or a well-padded box with the pedals and rear derailleur off. Photograph the bike before you check it in.
Can I fly an e-bike to Naha?
ANA accepts e-assist bicycles under its lithium-battery conditions and refuses every other electric vehicle. Check the battery's watt-hour rating against your airline's battery page before you book.
Can you take a bike on the Yui Rail monorail?
Yes. Yui Rail asks riders to fold or dismantle the bike and put it in a dedicated bag before boarding (Yui Rail riding rules). That's a Japanese rinko bag: wheels off, frame and wheels strapped together, everything inside one cover. A cardboard box or a hard case isn't mentioned, so ask the station staff at Naha Airport station before you try. Travel outside the morning and evening rush, and stand the bag clear of the doors.
Can you take a bike on Okinawa buses?
Yes. Okinawa Bus takes a rinko bag on its route buses if you agree that it carries no liability for damage, and the driver can refuse it when the bus is crowded (Okinawa Bus FAQ). The Airport Limousine Bus, which Okinawa Bus also runs, carries a bagged bike in the luggage hold if it measures no more than 20 × 120 × 80 cm, under the same waiver. A bike box deeper than 20 cm won't meet the limousine's size rule.
Where can you store a bike box at Naha Airport?
Three counters in the domestic terminal hold large items by the day, and one Naha rental shop will hold a box for the whole trip.
| Where | Bike or oversize rate | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before U Go, 2F departure lobby (Yuinichi Street) | Bicycle ¥1,000 a day; over 250 cm ¥1,000 a day | 09:00–20:30 | Cashless only; also does same-day hotel delivery |
| Okinawa Yamato Transport, 1F arrivals and 2F by security C | Large (150–250 cm) ¥1,000 a day | 1F 07:30–20:00; 2F 09:00–19:00 | Holds bags for up to a month |
| Sagawa Express, 1F arrivals | Large (140–260 cm) ¥1,000 a day | 09:00–19:00 | Same-day hotel delivery for bags up to 160 cm and 30 kg, ¥1,000 |
| Ryu-Q Rental Cycle, Makishi, Naha | ¥880 a day, ¥1,100 for 24 hours, ¥4,400 a week, ¥13,200 a month | 09:00–18:00 | Open to non-renters; collects from Naha hotels or the airport for ¥2,750 each way; book ahead |
Prices are per item per day as listed by Naha Airport and Ryu-Q Rental Cycle in October 2026.
A week at an airport counter costs ¥7,000. Ryu-Q charges ¥4,400 for the week if you drop the box at the shop yourself, or ¥9,900 if it collects from the airport and delivers back at ¥2,750 each way. Naha Airport has coin lockers on the first, second and third floors (Naha Airport lockers) but doesn't publish their sizes, so don't plan on one for a bike box. In Chatan, the Chatan Town Information Center keeps oversize bags for ¥500 an item a day.
Can a hotel keep my bike box?
Ask when you book. Our stay pages carry a bike section that notes box storage wherever a hotel publishes its policy.
Can you send a bike box from Naha Airport to your hotel?
Yes. Yamato's standard TA-Q-BIN takes parcels up to 200 cm (length + width + height) and 30 kg (Yamato), so measure the box before you count on it. At the airport, the Yamato counters run a same-day service to hotels on the main island: hand bags over by 13:00 and they reach the hotel by 19:00 (Naha Airport hand-luggage delivery). Before U Go takes bags until 15:30 for delivery by 19:00, and on the way home collects from the hotel front desk by 11:00 for pick-up at its airport counter after 15:00. None of these pages mentions bicycles by name, so tell the counter what's inside.
Where can you build the bike after you land?
Naha Airport's service list doesn't include a bike assembly area, so plan where you'll put it together before you fly. Two simple options:
- Build it at your hotel and send the empty box back to the airport counter, or straight to Ryu-Q for storage.
- Drive 25–30 minutes to Okinawa Ringyo's Haebaru workshop, where qualified mechanics handle repairs and can look over your build. Haebaru also has a ¥300 shower for after the ride.
Bring the tools you used to pack: pedal wrench, hex keys for the bars and seatpost, a torque key for carbon parts, and a pump with the right valve head.
What is a rinko bag, and how do you use one well?
A rinko bag is the thin, folding cover Japanese riders use to take a bike on trains and buses. You take both wheels off, strap them either side of the frame, protect the rear derailleur, and zip the lot into the bag with the bars turned in. On Yui Rail and Okinawa Bus it's the format the rules ask for. Carry it by the shoulder strap, and on a moving bus keep a hand on it, clear of the aisle.
If you'd rather not fly a bike at all, Okinawa Ringyo rents carbon GIANT and Anchor road bikes and fits your own pedals, and our guide to riding on the main island covers the rules once you're rolling.
