What is a minshuku, and which ones can you book on the Yaeyama islands?
A minshuku puts you in a family's house with a futon on the tatami and the owners' cooking at dinner. These are the ones our listings carry on Taketomi and Kuroshima, the room-only inn on Hateruma, and what Kohama and Iriomote have in their place.
By Ride Okinawa · Updated 2026-10

A minshuku is a family-run inn where you sleep on a futon in a tatami room and eat what the owners cook, and the price usually covers dinner and breakfast for each person. On the Yaeyama islands our listings carry Nitta-so and Minshuku Kohama-so on Taketomi, Minshuku Ah-chan on Kuroshima and the larger family inn Takana Ryokan on Taketomi, plus a room-only inn on Hateruma. Kohama and Iriomote have no minshuku in our set yet, so the last section points to the small hotels that come closest.
We read each inn's own pages, its Jalan and Rakuten Travel listings and the Taketomi tourism association's entries in October 2026, and nobody from Ride Okinawa stayed at these inns for this piece. Every price carries the date of the listing it came from.

What happens on a night in a minshuku?
The evening runs on the house's clock. You come over on an afternoon boat, the owner's van meets you at the pier, and dinner arrives at a set hour on a table you share with the other guests. That's why the inns ask you to arrive early. Kohama-so's last check-in is 18:00, and Takana Ryokan takes arrivals from 15:00 to 19:00 (Rakuten Travel, Kohama-so; Takana, both October 2026).
The cooking is the point. At Nitta-so the vegetables come from the family's garden, and when the boats bring fish in it turns up as sashimi (Taketomi tourism association, January 2026). The Fujii family has run Kohama-so since 1965, and awamori comes free with dinner, so the night tends to drift into yuntaku, the long Okinawan chat. Kohama-so's rooms are Japanese-style and divided by sliding fusuma panels, and you share the bath and toilet.
None of the Yaeyama inns here publishes a curfew. The strict one in our listings sits on Irabu in the Miyako islands, where Minshuku Maruyoshi locks its gate at 22:00 (Rakuten Travel, October 2026). On Taketomi the village goes quiet once the day boats leave, and Chirorin Mura is the café-bar that stays open until midnight.
How does a minshuku differ from a guesthouse?
The difference shows at dinner time, when a minshuku puts food on the table as part of the price. On Hateruma, Shima no Oyado Hatake no Mae has six private rooms round a shared TV lounge the owners call the yuntaku space, plus a coin laundry, and every night there is room only. The owners warn that the soundproofing between rooms is a little weak (Jalan, October 2026).
That leaves you to find dinner on an island with very few kitchens open at night. Izakaya Agan opens from 18:00 except Sundays and books out on many nights, and Mi Maru also opens at 18:00 near Hotel Oceans. Reserve a table when you reserve the room. Hatake no Mae rents electric bicycles for ¥1,500, and you can keep one until 9:00 the next morning, which covers the Hateruma loop in the afternoon and a ride out under the stars after dinner.
Hateruma's boat crosses open ocean, and our ferry page puts the odds of a winter cancellation at about even. Leave a spare day on Ishigaki at the end of a Hateruma stay.

Which minshuku should you book on Taketomi?
Nitta-so gives you the cheapest night with both meals, and dinner is the main event at Kohama-so. Families and anyone who'd like activities laid on should look at Takana Ryokan.
Nitta-so charged ¥8,500 per person with dinner and breakfast, or ¥5,500 room only, in the tourism association's January 2026 listing. Grandmother Hatsuko founded it, and her son Nagafumi and his wife run the seven rooms now. It suits riders on a budget and slow travellers. It has no website, so you phone, and the air conditioning and washing machine cost extra. The port pickup is free once you've booked it.
Minshuku Kohama-so is the one for food lovers. Jalan's lowest listed price was ¥11,800 for two in October 2026, and since the inn sells two-meal, breakfast-only and room-only nights, check which one that price buys. The inn's own site warns that a booking made two days ahead or on the day may come without meals, because the kitchen buys for the guests it expects (Kohama-so, October 2026). A minshuku dinner is the reason to sleep on Taketomi, and the owners can only cook it for guests who booked ahead. The drawback for riders is the boat. Kohama-so times its pickups to Yaeyama Kanko Ferry sailings, and our Taketomi ferry page notes that only Anei Kanko loads a bicycle that isn't bagged. Sail with Anei and the van won't be waiting, so you carry your bags in from the port, about 15 minutes on foot.
Takana Ryokan is the oldest inn on the island by the tourism association's account, and sisters Keiko and Hiroko Takana run it opposite the post office. Jalan listed rooms from ¥24,000 for two in October 2026, and Rakuten describes the standard plan as two meals of Okinawan home cooking in the dining hall. Some nights a grandfather takes guests out after dinner to look for coconut crabs, and the inn runs sanshin and jimami tofu sessions. It fits families best. Jalan says it takes no credit cards, so bring cash for a two-night stay.
For your own bathroom, Shima-yado Ganjuya rents two red-tile cottages with open-air baths and free bicycles, at ¥59,400 for two with breakfast on 15 February 2027 (Jalan). Hotel Peace Island Taketomijima listed ¥30,000 for two with breakfast on the same date (Jalan). The village lanes ride is 4.3 km of coral sand, so any rental bike does.

What is Minshuku Ah-chan on Kuroshima like?
Ah-chan is the stay for a quiet night among the cattle on a flat island. Its 11 rooms sit about ten minutes by bicycle from Kuroshima port, the pickup meets your boat if you send the departure time, and the bicycles and washing machine cost nothing. The owner fishes, and Jalan's listing describes a dinner of fresh local seafood. The inn also runs the fishing boat Mare-maru. Jalan listed rooms from ¥16,600 for two in October 2026 (Jalan). It suits anglers and anyone happy with a slow day.
The drawback is the timetable. Each ferry company runs three boats a day in winter 2026/27, so plan your return before you go (Kuroshima ferries). The Jalan page also says you can't pay by card on the island, so carry cash. On the free bike, the pasture loop runs 9.9 km with 19 m of climbing.
Island
Taketomi-jima
Taketomi-jima is a flat 5.4 km² island 10 to 15 minutes by boat from Ishigaki, where about 310 people live in a protected village of red-tiled houses and white sand lanes. Visitors cycle it on rental bikes and stay for the sunset at Nishi pier.
- Area
- 5.43 km²
- Best for
- slow cycling, village walks

What about Kohama and Iriomote?
Our listings have no minshuku on either island, so you're choosing between resorts on Kohama and small hotels on Iriomote. On Kohama, Haimurubushi listed a breakfast plan with a rental cart at ¥39,000 for two for 15 February 2027, and RISONARE Kohamajima had a room-only rate of ¥38,610 for two (Jalan, Haimurubushi; RISONARE). Kohama is 25 minutes from Ishigaki by boat, so you can sleep in a Taketomi minshuku and ride the Kohama loop as a day trip. Both resorts send a bus to meet the boats, and both leave you watching the last sailing from Ishigaki.
On Iriomote, Eco Village Iriomote feels closest to a family inn. It has 15 rooms, and its two-meal plan with a course of island produce listed at ¥28,400 for two for 15 February 2027, against ¥14,800 with breakfast only (Jalan). Couples and stargazers like it. The transfer runs from Ohara port only. Iriomote Jungle Hotel Painumaya stands alone in the forest at Takana with 30 rooms, at ¥16,200 for two with breakfast, and with no shops nearby you eat what the kitchen serves. Its pool stays shut until April. On the west coast, Hotel Hoshidate Iriomotejima includes breakfast at ¥25,960 for two, and its restaurant Gachimaya serves until 21:30, which gives you dinner without a set hour (Jalan). Uehara port is 20 minutes away, and when rough sea shuts Uehara the boats run to Ohara on the far side of the island.

How do you book and pay?
Phone, or book through Jalan or Rakuten, and tell the inn which boat you're on. Nitta-so and Takana Ryokan run no websites of their own, and the tourism association's pages list their phone numbers. Kohama-so wants a call at least 20 minutes before your boat sails from Ishigaki. Hatake no Mae asks you to ring twice, once with your sailing and again from the boat.
Carry cash for the small inns and for most of the islands' cafés. Okinawa's new accommodation tax starts on 1 February 2027 at 2% of the per-person room-only rate, capped at ¥2,000 a night, and Taketomi town isn't among the six municipalities adding a tax of their own (Okinawa Prefecture, updated 2 October 2026). Kohama-so closes for Taketomi's Tanadui festival each autumn, so look at its calendar first if you're travelling then.
Quick answers
What is included in a minshuku price?
A minshuku price usually covers dinner and breakfast for one person. Nitta-so on Taketomi charged ¥8,500 per person with both meals in January 2026. Many inns also sell room-only nights.
Do Yaeyama minshuku take credit cards?
Some Yaeyama minshuku and inns take no credit cards. Jalan's October 2026 listings say Takana Ryokan on Taketomi takes no cards and that cards can't be used for Minshuku Ah-chan on Kuroshima, so bring cash to the small islands.
