Route 79 leaves town for the flat shore of Nagura Bay, where Pottering Okinawa counts about 10 km of nearly level coast, then climbs over the hills to Kabira. A short detour on Route 207 runs through Kabira village past the bay, and Route 79 carries on east along the north coast through Yonehara and Nosoko to Ibaruma.
Pottering's own 120 km challenge course follows the same line and adds the Hirakubo peninsula from Ibaruma, which we keep as a separate route. Its notes describe a fast descent into Kawahira and the climbs at Yoshihara and Yamabare. By our route data our shorter loop climbs 606 m, and the longest single climb gains 51 m over 3.7 km.
At Ibaruma the island narrows to a neck, and Route 390 turns south past the Tamatorizaki lookout, New Ishigaki Airport and the village of Shiraho before running back into town along the south coast. In a winter north-north-east wind this whole leg runs with the wind at your back.
Kabira Koen Chaya above the bay closes only on Thursdays. The north coast's soba houses keep short weeks, so check them the night before or carry food from town.
Worth knowing
- Start early and reach Kabira Bay by late morning, when the city says the bay's colours show best.
- Buy sugarcane or fruit juice at Yonehara; it's the last juice stand we list before Ibaruma.
- If the wind is from the south, ride the loop the other way and keep Nagura Bay for the run home.
Ride safely
- Routes 79 and 390 are the island's through roads; ride single file and keep left, and expect rental cars driven by visitors.
- The north coast between Kabira and Ibaruma is lightly settled, and several food stops there open only on certain days. Carry food and water for 40 km.
- Pottering Okinawa notes a fast descent into Kawahira (Kabira) on Route 79; control your speed into the village.

FAQ
Quick answers about Ishigaki island loopよくある質問
How long is a bike ride around Ishigaki?
Our Ishigaki island loop is 74.7 km by our route data, with 606 m of climbing, and it leaves out the Hirakubo peninsula. Pottering Okinawa's challenge course adds the peninsula and comes to 120 km, which it reckons at about 6.5 hours.
Which way should you cycle around Ishigaki in winter?
Clockwise. JMA's normals give Ishigaki a north-north-east wind averaging 5.4 m/s in February, so riding the north coast at midday and turning south at Ibaruma puts it behind you for the last 31 km.
Where can you rent a road bike on Ishigaki?
Happy Pedal and Pottering Okinawa rent road bikes and deliver to hotels, the airport and the port, and BigJoy rents them from Okawa in town. Cycle Shop Yoshida rents road bikes and e-bikes from near Kabira.
