Prefectural Route 245 rings Kume-jima, and Japanese Wikipedia gives its length as 40.17 km. Our loop follows it for most of the way with two changes: it adds the causeway to Ou-jima and Tatami-ishi, and it cuts through Gima on Route 89. By our route data that comes to 37.2 km. Sugar Ride Kumejima runs a 45 km round-the-island course on the same roads each spring.
North of Eef the road follows the Maja coast at sea level, then climbs to Hiyajo Banta, and by our route data that rise gains 182 m over 4.9 km. The lookout stands about 200 m above the sea and looks down on Hatenohama, the long sandbar that you otherwise reach only by boat, with Aguni and the Kerama Islands on the horizon.
From Hiyajo the road runs west through the hills of the north past Gushikawa Castle Ruins to the airport, then Route 89 brings you through Gima and Kanegusuku, the island's main villages. The last stretch swings south round Shimajiri and up the east side to Eef, where the hotels and soba shops wait.
Worth knowing
- Go to Tatami-ishi first, near low tide, when the lava columns show best.
- Lunch at Garden Kitchen Gusuku in the north needs a phone call first; Parlor Kumi at the airport is the reliable fallback.
- Book the 30-minute flight from Naha early for Sugar Ride weekend in late April.
Ride safely
- Short steep pitches on the south coast reach 12.3% by our route data; keep your speed in check on the descents.
- The causeway and bridge to Ou-jima take the north wind side-on in winter.
- Carry water up the Hiyajo climb; the shops sit at the bottom in Maja and over the top in Uegusuku.

Quick answers about Kume-jima loop with Ou-jima and Hiyajo Bantaよくある質問
How long is a bike ride around Kume-jima?
Our Kume-jima loop from Eef Beach is 37.2 km by our route data with 519 m of climbing, including Ou-jima and the climb to Hiyajo Banta. Prefectural Route 245, which rings the island, is 40.17 km by Japanese Wikipedia's figure.

Yes, from above. Hiyajo Banta, the cliff-top lookout on Kume-jima's north-east coast, looks straight down on Hatenohama, and our loop climbs to it. Landing on the sandbar needs a boat tour.
