Gusukube was a town of 57.60 km² and 6,879 people when it merged into Miyakojima City in October 2005, its office in Fukuzato. It covers the south-east of the island: Aragusuku, Shimozatozoe, Sunagawa, Tomori, Nagama, Nishizatozoe, Higa, Fukuzato and Bora. Under the town lies the world's first large-scale underground dam, built to hold the rainwater that sinks through the limestone.
For a visitor it is the coast that matters. Route 83 runs past the shore-snorkelling lagoons at Aragusuku and Yoshino to Boraga and finally the 2 km spur of Higashi-Hennazaki. Maruyoshi Shokudo at the Sunagawa junction on Route 390 is the soba stop, and Imgya Marine Garden at Tomori is the calm family swim.
