Nakagusuku is an east-coast village of about 23,000 people south of Kitanakagusuku, and the World Heritage ruins of Nakagusuku castle stand on its ridge. It is the third most populous village in Japan and among the fastest growing.
Nakagusuku's ridge carries the castle the village is named for. In the 2015 census the village added more people than any other village in Japan and grew by 10 percent in five years. Its own count passed 22,900 at the end of September 2026.
