By day Sakaemachi Market is a cluster of narrow lanes and small shops in Asato, a stop east of Kokusai-dori on the monorail. In the evening stools come out into the lanes and the counters fill. Benriya Yuriron, a gyoza counter that began as a deli, is credited with starting the market's night drinking, and bars such as Seikatsu no Gara squeeze seven or eight stools around a counter.
Urizun, open since 1972 at the edge of the market, serves Okinawan home and court cooking, and Mapple says it stocks awamori from every distillery in the prefecture. COFFEE potohoto, a roaster run by Q Grader Yamada Tetsushi, keeps the lanes busy in the daytime. On the last Saturday of each month from June to October a street festival takes over the market.
