Tamagusuku was a village until 2006, with its office at Fusato, which served as Nanjo's city hall until 2018. It runs from the caves of Maekawa, where Okinawa World and Gangala Valley sit, down to the Pacific at Hyakuna. In 1945 the Americans ran a vast internment camp around Hyakuna and Nakandakari, and from 1951 about half the village's land was taken for the Chinen supply area, including its water sources.
Ryukyu myth places the arrival of Amamikiyo on the Hyakuna shore, and the springs of Ukinju-Hainju inland are said to be where rice was first grown in Ryukyu. Tamagusuku castle, a sacred site since kingdom days, stands on the hill above. Most visitors stop on the coast, where Hama-no-Ya and Yamano Chaya Rakusui sit above Mibaru Beach and Cafe Yabusachi looks down on Hyakuna.
