Kokusai-dori runs about a mile from the Prefectural Office to Asato, and its frontage is now mostly souvenir shops and hotels. Step off it into the covered arcades of Heiwa-dori and Ichiba-hondori and you reach the Makishi Public Market, with Tsuboya's pottery lanes beyond.
It is an easy place to stay without a car, with three monorail stations along its length and buses on the street itself. After dark the min'yo live house Shimauta, where the vocal group Nenes plays three sets a night, fills the third floor of the Haisai Building on the street.
