How does cycling differ on Okinawa's outer islands?
Miyako's bridges and capes take the full winter north-northeasterly, Taketomi's village lanes are coral sand, Iriomote asks for 40 km/h to protect its wildcats, and of the two Yaeyama ferry companies only Anei Kanko loads an unbagged bike on its high-speed boats.

Cycling on the outer islands changes with every crossing. Miyako-jima and Ishigaki have the longest rides and the road-bike rentals, and Miyako's bridges and capes stand open to a winter wind that JMA's 1991–2020 normals put at about 5 m/s from the north-northeast at both islands' weather stations. The small Yaeyama islands are short laps for a rented city bike or e-bike. Taketomi's village lanes are coral sand, and Iriomote asks everyone on its roads to hold 40 km/h, or 30 km/h in the villages, for the Iriomote cat. Yonaguni is hilly and the windiest of the stations in this guide, and Yoron is a 23.7 km lap with a single traffic light. Your own bike can fly to Miyako, Ishigaki and Yoron, and getting it onto a boat to the smaller islands depends on which ferry company you use.
We built this guide from the shops' own websites, the Taketomi Town tourism association's listings, the ferry companies' rules and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) normals, all checked in October 2026. Prices live on each shop's page, linked from the table. For the weather month by month, see winter riding on the outer islands.

Which ferries from Ishigaki Ritou Terminal carry bikes?
Yaeyama Kanko Ferry's high-speed boats have no space for bicycles. A bike taken apart and packed into a rinko bag can travel as hand luggage, and the company says it may refuse a large one. Anei Kanko loads non-electric bicycles onto its high-speed boats for an extra charge, and it can turn one away when the boat is busy or the vessel can't take it; it also warns that spray and knocks on the crossing can mark the bike. Anei's fare sheet doesn't list that charge, so ask at the counter. Anei carries e-bikes and motorbikes only on its cargo ferries Paikaji and Ferry Hateruma 2, and they sail a few days a week.
| Island | Yaeyama Kanko Ferry high-speed boat | Anei Kanko high-speed boat | Anei cargo ferry from Ishigaki (bicycle fare) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taketomi | Rinko bag only | Non-electric bikes, extra charge, space permitting | Tuesday and Saturday 15:00 (¥490) |
| Kohama | Rinko bag only | Non-electric bikes, extra charge, space permitting | Wednesday and Friday 8:30 from September to April, Sunday 8:30 from August to April, afternoons in summer (¥490) |
| Kuroshima | Rinko bag only | Non-electric bikes, extra charge, space permitting | Monday 8:30 from September to April, Thursday 14:30 all year (¥490) |
| Iriomote (Ohara) | Rinko bag only | Non-electric bikes, extra charge, space permitting | Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 9:30 (¥730) |
| Iriomote (Uehara) | Rinko bag only | Non-electric bikes, extra charge, space permitting | Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:30 from September to April, mornings in summer (¥730) |
| Hateruma | Not on its network | Non-electric bikes, extra charge, space permitting | Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 9:00 (¥630) |
The cargo ferries turn round quickly. In the October 2026 to March 2027 schedule the Hateruma boat leaves for Ishigaki again at 13:30, and the Taketomi boat at 15:50, so an e-bike sent over on a cargo ferry usually stays the night.
How windy are Miyako's bridges and capes?
JMA's Miyakojima station records a mean wind of 4.6 to 5.3 m/s from December to March, most often from the north-northeast, and the day's strongest wind reaches 10 m/s on about three to five days a month in that season. The bridges out to Ikema, Kurima and Irabu and the long cape at Higashi-Hennazaki have nothing upwind to break it. Ride those legs early, before the day's fatigue sets in, and keep a spare morning for a crossing if the forecast is strong.
The island's last road race stayed off the bridges altogether. The 2018 Tour de Miyakojima dropped the Irabu, Ikema and Kurima crossings for rider safety and to spare tourist traffic, and we found no edition since. The 123 km bike leg of the All Japan Triathlon Miyakojima in April still crosses the Ikema Bridge and runs out to Higashi-Hennazaki.
The drop-bar rentals in Hirara are Shima no Cycling's chromoly Tokyobike Sports in two sizes, and the shop lends them only to riders who can change a tube. BIGJOY's e-bikes run a battery the shop rates at about 90 km, and Shimasora Pottering hands out folding bikes at Shimojishima Airport for Shimoji and Irabu. Miyako Island Tours' cycling column warns that parts of the island circuit have no convenience store, so leave Hirara with full bottles.
What is road riding like on Ishigaki?
Ishigaki City named its mapped island routes the Yukiya Arashiro Road after the island-born pro who was the first Japanese rider to finish all three Grand Tours. The full lap runs 121.7 km with 1,369 m of climbing and 104 km without a traffic light. Shorter versions go out and back to Nagura Bay (27.5 km) or Kabira Bay (36.3 km), or loop the island without the Sakieda peninsula and the north (76.3 km), all from Funagura Park in the city, and the city's site offers GPX files for each.
The Ishigakijima station's winter wind averages 5.2 to 5.6 m/s from the north-northeast. On a typical winter day that makes the ride up the east coast toward Hirakubo the headwind leg, and the run home down the west side through Kabira gets the help. The north of the island is hilly and thinly settled, so plan food and water around the few places that open on your day.
Ishigaki has the widest choice of drop-bar rentals in this guide. Happy Pedal and Pottering Okinawa deliver to hotels and fit SPD or SPD-SL pedals for free, Pottering rents a full-carbon Felt and Colnago, and Cycle Shop Yoshida rents from Kabira with a BESV gravel e-bike in its fleet. The Yukiya Arashiro Cycling Event on the last weekend of November is the island's big ride, and the Ishigaki Triathlon fills the rental fleets in April.
Can you ride Taketomi's sand lanes on a road bike?
Leave the road bike on Ishigaki. The lanes through Taketomi's village are spread with white coral sand, and Nitta Kanko recommends its bikes only to riders who are used to cycling because most of the island's roads are sand. Ishigaki TripAssist suggests children walk their bikes through the village. Tomori Kanko's rules ban riding on sand, the beach or into the sea, so park before the sand at Kondoi.
The ring road links the village with Kondoi and with the star-sand beach at Kaiji, about 10 and 15 minutes by bike from Nitta's shop. Most shops send a van to meet the boats, and Minemoto is a three-minute walk from the pier. TripAssist notes that rental bikes often have no lock key, so note your bike's number before you walk off. Several shops close for the two days of the Tanadui seed-sowing festival, so check the dates before a day trip.
How hilly is Kohama?
Kohama rides short and steep. Ufudaki tops the island at 99 m and the village climbs from the port, and Ishigaki TripAssist warns of hills that defeat even some e-bikes; its model cycling course takes four to five hours around an island it puts at about 17 km. Rent an e-bike at the port and ask the shop for the direction that dodges the worst climbs.
Is Kuroshima as flat as it looks?
Mostly. Kuroshima is pasture and stone walls with a shoreline that Shima Cafe Heartland puts at 12.62 km, and the café reckons on about two hours to ride around at an easy pace. TripAssist flags a slight rise from the port to the observation tower and starts its route the other way. Nothing on the island breaks the north wind, so in winter try to finish with the wind behind you. Nakamoto Beach has toilets and covered benches, and vending machines are scarce, so carry water from the port.
How far is it around Hateruma?
Hateruma's loop road runs about 10 km by Nemo Jitensha's count, around an island with about 15 km of coast. The shore is low and the village sits on the rise in the middle, so rides out to Nishihama or the Southernmost Point monument end with a climb back up, and TripAssist singles out the long pull from Pemuchi Beach up to the star observatory. Shade is scarce and so are vending machines outside the village. Wi-Fi is patchy enough that TripAssist tells riders to download an offline map first.
Anei Kanko runs the Hateruma boats, 70 to 90 minutes from Ishigaki, and TripAssist reckons on about a 50% chance of cancellation from December to February. Leave a spare day in the plan.
Why does Iriomote ask riders to slow down?
Because traffic kills its wildcats. The Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center has recorded 102 traffic accidents involving the Iriomote cat between 1978 and 2 August 2025, and 94 of those cats died. Yamaneko Rent-a-Car's safety pledge asks for 40 km/h on Iriomote's roads and 30 km/h in the villages, and the conservation office marks two "Yamaneko Yonnaa Road" zones on prefectural Route 215 where sightings and crashes cluster. For the year from April 2026 they cover 3 km from the Urauchi River lookout to Sonai in the west and 6 km from the Nobarazaki lookout to the Shira Bridge road park in the east, and the zones are reviewed each year.
A road bike passes 40 km/h on a descent without much effort, so ride those zones on the brakes and keep an eye on the verges. Uehara and Ohara ports are about 40 minutes apart by car, the island has no convenience stores and its few small supermarkets carry limited stock, according to TripAssist, so carry food.
We couldn't confirm a public bicycle rental on Iriomote in October 2026; the tourism association's transport listings show car and electric-vehicle rentals at Ohara and Uehara. A bike has to come over bagged on a high-speed boat or on Anei's cargo ferry. In winter the Uehara boats cancel often, Ohara usually stays open, and the ferry companies run a free bus from Ohara to Uehara when that happens; we couldn't find out whether those buses take bikes.
Is Yonaguni worth riding?
Yes, for a rider who likes hills and doesn't mind wind. Rakuni Koto describes Yonaguni as a 25 km lap of uplift and hollows, and Yonaguni Honda gives 27 km around; both warn about the climbs, and Rakuni Koto adds that there are no shops or vending machines once you leave the villages. Horses and cattle graze behind cattle grids that the Honda shop flags as a fall risk on two wheels. JMA's normals make Yonagunijima the windiest station in this guide, with a mean wind of 7.6 to 8.2 m/s from December to February and 19 to 22 days a month when the wind reaches 10 m/s. Rakuni Koto's large-battery e-bike is the sensible choice in that season.
What is riding on Yoron like?
Yoron is 23.7 km around by the island's official count, with one traffic light, few road signs and some blind corners, according to the tourism association, and Nangoku Rent-a-Car warns that it's hillier than people expect. No buses or taxis wait at the airport or the port, so arrange a pickup or a bike delivery before you land; both Yoron rentals deliver for a fee. JMA's Yoron station runs about 2 °C cooler than the Yaeyama stations in winter, with a February average high of 19.8 °C. The Yoron Marathon takes over the outer road on 29 November 2026. We didn't verify bike rules on the Naha–Motobu–Yoron ferries for this guide; see the route page.
How far apart are the water stops?
We couldn't find published distances between shops for any of these islands, so here is what the local sources say. On Taketomi, Kuroshima and Hateruma, buy drinks in the village or at the port before you set off, since vending machines are few once you leave. Yonaguni has nothing between its villages by Rakuni Koto's account, and Iriomote has no convenience store at all. Parts of Miyako's island circuit go without a convenience store, and the north of Ishigaki is thinly settled.
Should you rent a bike or bring your own?
Rent on the small islands. Their lanes are short and either sandy or steep, most shops meet the boat or sit by the pier, and your own bike crosses in a rinko bag, for an extra charge on Anei's high-speed boats when there's room, or on a cargo ferry that runs a few days a week. On Ishigaki a rented road bike comes closest to your own, since Happy Pedal and Pottering Okinawa fit your pedal system and adjust stems, and Pottering rents full-carbon bikes.
On Miyako the drop-bar rentals we found are steel Tokyobikes in two sizes, so a rider who cares about fit should fly in with a bike; the guide to bringing your bike covers the airline rules. Race weeks change the sums. Rentals fill for the Ishigaki and Miyako triathlons in April, and the Miyako organisers ask athletes to ship bikes by courier because flights that week can't always carry every one.
